Impact, Overview, Fees and Action Required

Impact Statement: A review of all Listing Reports is necessary to determine which products comply with new/revised requirements and which products will require re-evaluation. NOTE: Effective immediately, this revised standard will be exclusively used for evaluation of new products unless the Applicant requests in writing that current requirements be used along with their understanding that their listings will be withdrawn on Effective Date noted above, unless the product is found to comply with new/revised requirements.

Overview of Changes: (Specific details of new/revised requirements are found in table below);

  • Clause 5.5 has new requirements for motors with electronic protection against overheating.
  • Clause 6.10 has new test requirements for the reliability of electronic protection circuit.
  • Marking item (f) added addressing electronic protection Clause 7.1.

Schedule: So that shipping of products with Listing Marks will not be interrupted, an approximate schedule has been established to ensure Listing Reports are found compliant by Effective Date:

  • December 10, 2015 = 8 Month Report Review – Intertek will review all Reports. Update if compliance is verified or issue Findings Letter/Quote for any re-evaluations needed
  • February 8, 2016 = 6 Month Quote Cut-off – Quotes returned for necessary re-evaluations
  • July 8, 2016 = 30 Day Warning – Client advised of all non-compliant Reports to be Suspended
  • August 11, 2016 = Effective Date – ATM Suspended for all non-compliant Reports

Fees: An initial review of Listing Report (s) will be covered by a direct billing project and will be invoiced at not more than $1000 per report.

Client Action Required:

Information – To assist our Engineer with review of your Listing Reports, please submit technical information in response to the new/revised paragraphs noted in the attached or explain why these new/revised requirements do not apply to your product (s).

Current Listings Not Active? – Please immediately identify any current Listing Reports or products that are no longer active and should be removed from our records. We will do this at no charge as long as Intertek is notified in writing prior to the review of your reports.

Motors with electronic protection
5.5.1 Motors shall be subjected to the running-heating temperature test of Clause 6.3, the locked-rotor temperature test of Clause 6.4, and the locked-rotor endurance test of Clause 6.6.
5.5.2 Motors having locked rotor protection provided by an electronic protection circuit shall be subjected to the test for reliability of electronic protection circuit in Clause 6.10.
6.10 New section added;

Reliability of electronic protection circuit
6.10.1 General

This test applies to motors with electronic protection.
6.10.2 Electronic protection

Electronic protection shall comply with Clause 6.10.3 or 6.10.4.
6.10.3 Method A

Electronic controls used to provide overheating protection shall be evaluated as a Class B control as specified in CSA C22.2 No. 0.8.
6.10.4 Method B

As an alternative to Method A of Clause 6.10.3, electronic controls used to provide overheating protection shall be evaluated as a Type 2 (protective) control as specified in CAN/CSA-E60730-1.

7.1 

Additions to existing requirements are underlined below.

Motors shall be plainly marked in a permanent manner, in a place where the details will be readily visible after installation in accordance with CSA C22.2 No. 100 and the following:

a) “THERMALLY PROTECTED”, which may be abbreviated to “TP” on small motors (i.e., having less than 100 W output), for all motors that meet the requirements in Clause 6 for running-heating and locked-rotor;
b) “IMPEDANCE PROTECTED”, which may be abbreviated to “ZP” on small motors (i.e., having less than 100 W output), for impedance-protected motors;
c) instructions for manual reset operation, if not self-evident;
d) any instruction or wiring information, including electrical ratings, that is necessary with separately mounted components, including identification of components, such as impedance devices or relays, that are required to complete the motor protector circuit;
e) when protective devices are intended to control an external coil circuit, the rating expressed in volts and volt amperes together with the words “coil load” or “pilot duty”; and
f) “Electronically Protected”, which may be abbreviated to “EP”, for a motor employing electronic circuitry that has been tested for running-heating and locked-rotor protection.
