Requirements for Convertible Tricycle Pushchairs
Vol. 1387 | 30 Nov 2023
A new document is being prepared by the CEN committee for the safety assessment of a product known as convertible tricycle pushchairs (CTP), which are vehicles designed for use by young children in at least 2 modes:
- Being primarily for play and learning to steer and pedal,
- To transport a child similar in intent and purpose to a pushchair
For a tricycle to be considered as a CTP, the product shall have a pushing handle and sufficient support for the child’s back (min. 250mm in backrest length) and includes any of the below features:
- Bumper bar
- Possibility to semi-recline or recline the child’s seat
- Reversible child’s seat
- Footrest
- A system for overriding front wheel steering for the child and parent
This new specification does not cover those units marketed as pushchairs, which should be tested against EN 1888. In addition, toys or the toy functions of CTP are covered by Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC).
This specification is built on hazard basis approach, incorporating many applicable requirements from EN 1888. This includes assessment of the following, among others:
- Restraint and harness systems
- Entrapment hazards
- Locking mechanisms
- Entanglement and strangulation hazards
- Choking and ingestion hazards
- Parking and braking devices
- Stability and structural integrity
- Marking and product information
Intertek continually monitors the development progress and will provide timely updates. In addition, we can offer one-stop service to support you in the safety assessment of these CTP to meet national requirements for different markets.
