Australia Issues Proposed Ban Notice for Decorative Alcohol Fueled Burners

On 21 December 2016, the Commonwealth of Australia proposed a draft notice for a national ban on decorative alcohol fueled burners following the interim bans imposed in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and Australian Capital Territory.

Decorative alcohol fueled burners are defined as devices designed for domestic use producing a flame using alcohol as fuel, primarily for decorative purpose, excluding each of the following:

• Those with a power output of more than 4.5kW
• Those that require installation in a fixed position
• Those designed for food warming

The fuel used in decorative alcohol fueled burners is typically ethanol in liquid or gel form. The flames can be difficult to see and the fuel may explode if the burner is refueled while lit or still warm, causing serious burn injuries to consumers and house fires.
