Adelaide, Australia - Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, is pleased to announce it was recently awarded a contract for the provision of non-destructive testing (NDT), destructive testing and materials testing services for ASC Shipbuilding’s Hunter Class Frigate Program.

ASC Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of BAE Systems Australia, has contracted Intertek’s Adelaide Inspection Services (Intertek AIS) to deliver testing for materials evaluation, weld procedures, and welder qualification for activities performed within the prototype scope of the Hunter Class Frigate Program. Intertek AIS will utilize NDT techniques such as Radiographic Testing (X-Ray/Gamma), Ultrasonic Testing (Manual / Phased Array), Magnetic Particle Testing, Penetrant Testing and Eddy Current Testing to ensure asset reliability and design integrity.

NDT is vital for assessing quality and safety through the detection of defects and irregularities. The growing need to utilize NDT is a result of companies looking to extend the life of components and assets while also adhering to increased regulation. Intertek’s experts provide a complete examination of components, equipment and assets using advanced and conventional NDT techniques for customers in a wide variety of industries and sectors.

Andrew Mansfield, Regional Director, Intertek Industry Services Australia stated, “Intertek has brought the very best of its local and global capability to this key strategic project. Our commitment to delivering world-class evaluation procedures and processes is underpinned by an uncompromising focus on safety and a team of highly qualified and experienced professionals who will contribute not only to the successful completion of the initial prototype, but also build out the baseline required as the Hunter Class Frigate Program moves forward into full-scale production. Intertek is fully invested in and looking forward to this important partnership with BAE Systems Australia”.

ASC Shipbuilding Managing Director, Craig Lockhart, said “Part of our strategy to build Australian industry capability includes placing contracts with Australian businesses, so we are pleased to be working with Intertek’s AIS. We are committed to supporting the creation of a sovereign and continuous naval shipbuilding industry, which will deliver jobs for thousands of Australians.”
