Intertek Accredited to Certify Electrical Equipment Intended for Hazardous Locations Under Zone Classification System in U.S.
04 Jan 2017
Chicago – Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has been accredited by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to certify electrical products intended for use in hazardous locations under the zone classification system, which is used widely across the globe. This approval expands on the Company’s existing status as an OSHA Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) and builds upon its existing ability to certify products under the class/division/group system previously used in the U.S.
"As a global company, Intertek is committed to working with customers to enable them to more easily and efficiently access multiple markets with products that meet the highest possible standards,” said Tom Connaughton, Global Director of Business Development for Intertek. “We are thrilled to receive this accreditation so we can offer expertise and services that will allow products to be certified in a more universal manner, allowing one product to enter numerous markets.”
Electrical products intended to be used in settings where flammable gases, vapors and combustible dust are present must be tested and certified by an independent third-party testing laboratory. The U.S. recently adopted the zone classification system, which uses clearly defined distances from a hazardous source, eliminating confusion and giving manufacturers more freedom in the design and production of products. The U.S. Coast Guard will require zone evaluations for all hazardous locations it oversees as of April 1, 2018, meaning design considerations will be underway as early as 2017.
Intertek provides global solutions to the hazardous locations industry with a proven track record of success supporting clients. From the widely recognized ETL mark and OSHA NRTL approval in North America, to ATEX notified body status and IECEx certification in Europe, Intertek’s team of engineers and technicians have the experience and know-how to help with the certification process and provide training and technical service solutions designed with the industry in mind.
