Intertek strengthens asset assurance with new pipeline inline inspection services
17 May 2016
Shanghai, China - Intertek, a leading quality assurance provider to industries worldwide, launches a new inspection service which safely and accurately assesses pipelines for external and internal defects, potentially caused by corrosion, as well as ensuring regulatory compliance using advanced inline inspection tools.Government and trade organizations have implemented mandatory pipeline inspections throughout the oil and gas industry. Over time, corrosion and erosion can degrade the pipeline material causing leaks and potentially jeopardizing the product flowing through the pipeline. Inspections are intended to mitigate these risks and ensure public safety. Inline inspection, specifically, is important early in the life of the pipeline as it is used to detect manufacturing defects and provide a basis for future inspections.
Intertek’s trained technical experts are able to examine the structural integrity of pipelines using inline inspection tools. An inline inspection tool is a cylindrical device placed inside a pipeline in order to gather information relating to the quality and condition of the pipe. While the inspection tool travels through the pipeline, onboard sensors capture important data as well as the tool’s location. As it travels, field technicians use above-ground markers to monitor its passage at predetermined points along the pipeline. The results help pipeline operators determine anomalies and identify areas that may require further examination, repair or replacement.
“At Intertek we’re always looking for ways to help ensure our customers remain compliant with codes and regulations as well as confident with the condition of their assets” said Jan-Jörg Müller-Seiler, EVP Global Resources. “With early detection of problems, before they cause damage, operating inefficiencies or in-service failure, pipeline inline inspection services provide our customers with the valuable data they need to avoid the potential for negative outcomes such as shutdown and financial losses.”
