CTIA Announces 1,000 Apps Tested for KnowMyApp.org
10 Sep 2014
Website informs consumers how much data their favorite apps uses as well as resources for developers to build more efficient apps
LAS VEGAS, September 10, 2014 – On day two of super Mobility Week, CTIA-The Wireless Association® announced that more than 1,000 apps have been tested as part of the KnowMyApp program, which is available at KnowMyApp.org.
Launched in December 2013, KnowMyApp.org informs customers how much data their favorite apps use before they download them while also providing app developers with resources to build more data-efficient apps. Testing the top paid and free apps from both the Apple iTunes and Google Play stores as well app submissions directly from developers, Intertek, the leading quality solutions provider to industries worldwide, tests and provides information to consumers on:
- How the app was tested;
- How much data is used when downloaded, when opened initially, during active run time and background time;
- How the app impacts data plans (i.e., 300MB, 1GB, 2GB and 4GB); and
- How users can conserve data usage.
CTIA and its participating member companies also offer “best practices” for app developers to help maximize content and functionality while minimizing impact on consumers’ data plans and network resources.
“Developing apps that utilize data more efficiently helps consumers reduce their data usage, which is important when managing their monthly wireless service accounts as well as helping manage the overall traffic on the wireless networks. Mobile networks are different, and this process helps app providers build services optimized for our networks. By empowering consumers with information, working with app developers to create ‘smarter’ apps and providing wireless carriers with more spectrum, I am confident the U.S. mobile ecosystem will remain the world’s leader,” said Meredith Attwell Baker, CTIA President and CEO.
“This program has been highly successful in providing consumers with valuable information on data usage, and has informed developers as to how their applications impact consumers’ data plans,” said William Brent Melson, Director of Technology Services and Development, Intertek. “The more applications we are able to test, the more we are able to learn about the ways in which apps use data. That helps us to further expand the program, and provide the public with even more information they can use to conserve data and use apps smartly and efficiently.”
super Mobility Week attendees can interact with Intertek at booth 5831 and take a tour of the site and learn more about the testing process. Interested developers can also enter to win a free app submission in the KnowMyApp program.
