Intertek, a leading provider of quality solutions across a wide range of industries worldwide, shared expert knowledge and experience as well as the benefits of an Inspection Data Management System (IDMS) at Plant Condition Management Systems User Group Conference.
Mark Vining, Director of Operations, Intertek Asset Integrity Services (AIS), was recently invited to speak at a Plant Condition Management Systems (PCMS) software user group conference. The conference, held by Mistras, was attended by petrochemical industry leaders including inspection personnel, data specialists, and other mechanical integrity subject matter experts. Conference topics focused on the utilization and/or enhancement of the system software.
Mark was Project Manager for an inspection data validation and RBI implementation project at a BP refinery in Texas City, Texas, USA. During that project, PCMS was used and at the conference Mark spoke of the philosophies, processes and techniques utilized to rebuild the BP TXC IDMS (Inspection Data Management System) as well as implement RBI across all major process units. During the project special attention was given to validation and reliable documentation of existing thickness data. Thickness data is important as it is a maintained record of the wall thickness of equipment and piping as well as the rate of corrosion against that thickness.
IDMS software programs organize inspection and reliability data for a facility's pressure equipment relief devices, tankage and piping; these applications can establish and track inspection tasks, collect and maintain inspection results and, if managed correctly, provide reliable proactive inspection plans. This information is vital to ensure timely and effective inspections thus minimizing plant downtime, ensuring equipment and piping longevity, reducing risks to HSE, and maximizing resource utilization.
"I was honored that BP and Mistras allowed me to present on the great accomplishments our team achieved while working at the BP Texas City facility. Our presentation was well received, generated much discussion and revealed a lot of passion around compliance related data techniques and approaches. I couldn't be more proud of what we were able to provide BP. The facility now has a pacesetter data system that has led to 100 percent pressure equipment compliance, a better understanding of the facility risk profile and a more efficient business related decision process based on sound and reliable data."
Mark Vining is the Director of Operations for the Intertek AIS In-Service division in Houston, TX. He has 25 years of experience in the insurance, power and refining industries.
