Intertek Expands Engine Emission Research Capabilities
11 May 2010
Intertek, a global leader in testing, inspection and certification services, has expanded its engine emissions testing services in the USA with the recent addition of a heavy-duty dilute emissions tunnel at Intertek Automotive Research. This enhanced capability better helps their clients evaluate compliance with US EPA requirements for exhaust emission control.
The Constant Volume Sampler (CVS) emissions tunnel is a full dilute heated system which coupled with the state-of-the-art gaseous and particulate sampling equipment enables extremely accurate low-level measurement capabilities to meet the increasingly stringent regulations.
Manufacturers of heavy-duty engines and engine-related components and technologies will be required to conduct testing according to EPA regulation Part 1065 beginning July 1, 2010. The emissions tunnel allows Intertek to provide faster and more detailed/more cost-effective evaluations for clients. The tunnel joins Intertek’s existing portfolio of testing services for automotive emissions research, development, and certification capabilities available in the USA and internationally.
The tunnel supports the certification of spark ignition (gasoline, natural gas and LGP) and compression ignition (diesel) engines to transient emissions standards for engines ranging from 50 HP (37kW) to 600 HP (450kW). Particulate emissions are collected on a filter and measured gravimetrically. In addition, the following dilute gaseous emissions are measured: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NO/NOx), total hydrocarbons (THC), and methane (CH4).
The expanded engine emissions testing capability is complemented by an on-site chemistry laboratory which provides chemical speciation of the dilute exhaust to EPA and other international standards.
“The new full dilute emissions test capability at our San Antonio lab is a significant addition to Intertek USA emissions and engine testing capabilities. EPA regulations continue to evolve and place pressure on clients to get the correct certifications. We help clients to handle their compliance with regulations as efficiently as possible, and continue to invest in technologies and new services to deliver this.” said Ed Foerster, Lab Director for Intertek Automotive Services.
