Planning For Your Business and Protecting Your Products Under CEPA’s Chemical Management Plan

On December 8, 2006, the Canadian government pledged to spend $300 million over four years to implement their Chemicals Management Plan. Four years later, where do we stand? Environment Canada and Health Canada have together categorized the Domestic Substance List into high, medium and low priorities for action. Together they have now assessed 200 chemical substances identified as high priorities for action under the initiative known as “The Industry Challenge.” These substances were predisposed to being declared “CEPA Toxic” and were anticipated to be subject to severe restrictions, including possible bans.

This presentation will briefly review “The Industry Challenge” and provide an update on the fate of the 200 high priority substances – industry participation, the assessment outcomes, the proposed risk management, and, most importantly, the foreseeable impact on the chemical industry and our downstream stakeholders. The presentation will end with a discussion of “what’s next,” including international collaboration activities and the proposed path forward for the 3000 medium priority substances and the remaining low priorities.
