Standard: NEMA Standards Publication LD 3.3 Light Resistance

Certification Required: N/A

Scope: Per NEMA LD 3.3: "These tests measure the ability of high-pressure decorative laminate to retain its color when exposed to a light source having a frequency range approximating sunlight through window glass."

Applicable Products: High-pressure decorative laminate

Test Procedure: Specimens are mounted in the xenon-arc machine in a masking holder that exposes half of the specimen to the light source. The exposure period is 72 hours under the conditions specified in the method. Upon completion of the exposure period, specimens are removed from the sample holders and allowed to condition at room temperature for 24 hours.Once conditioning is finished the specimens are placed on a flat surface and viewed from a distance of 30 in. to 36 in. at an angle of 45 ̊to 75 ̊from the horizontal plane. If a change in color is observed, the surface of the specimen is coated with petroleum jelly and re-examined. Any color changes that are still visible are recorded.

End Result: This test results in the light resistance of the laminate given as no effect, slight effect, moderate effect, or severe effect.
