Standard: ICC 500 – Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters
Scope: This standard provides minimum design and testing requirements for storm shelters and storm shelter components that provide a safe refuge from storms producing high winds, hurricanes, and tornadoes.
Applicable Products: This standard is applicable to standalone storm shelters, windows, doors, louvers, and other impact protective systems.
Test Procedure: This standard covers impact, static pressure, and cyclic pressure testing of storm shelters and storm shelter components.
End Result: Storm shelters and storm shelter components successfully meeting the design and testing requirements of this standard are qualified for use as, or in, a “Storm Shelter” as required by building codes.
Storm shelters and storm shelter components that meet the FEMA P-361 funding criteria in addition to all ICC 500 requirements are qualified for designation as a “Safe Room” and are eligible for purchase or installation using FEMA grant funds.
