Sequence VH Test (ASTM D8256)
Engine
The VH test engine is a Ford, spark ignition, four stroke, V8 engine with a displacement of 4.6 L. Features of this engine include an overhead camshaft, a cross-flow fast-burn cylinder head design, two valves per cylinder and electronic port fuel injection. The test engine is assembled with many new parts prior to each test.
Test Operation
The Sequence VH test method is used to evaluate an engine’s oil ability to control of engine deposits under operating condition selected to accelerated deposit formation. Deposit formation includes but no limited engine varnish and oil sludge. The test is run for a total of 216 hours, consisting of 54 cycles of 4 hours each. Each cycle consists of three stages. The three stages can be characterized as a mixture of low-temperature and moderate-temperature, light and medium duty operations.
