The California Safe Cosmetics Act (Senate Bill 484) is a state law which took effect on January 1, 2007 to protect the health of consumers from potentially hazardous chemicals. The California Safe Cosmetics Act enacts the following obligations on cosmetics manufacturers that sell products in the State of California:
- Disclose to the state any product ingredient that is identified on state or federal lists of chemicals that cause cancer or birth defects
- Requirement that labeling includes ingredients which are on state or federal lists of chemicals that cause cancer or birth defects
- Supply of health-related information reports regarding cosmetic ingredients to the California Department of Health Services (DHS)
